Let's see: Most hits in the MLB (again) and the second-highest batting average, not to mention having his 9th straight season with 200 hits and becoming the second-fastest player to reach 2,000 MLB hits. Oh yeah, another Gold Glove and All-Star selection too. Yeah, horrible year that was... Not.

The reason that got me watching MLB in the first place

that is the icon and speech of the mlb

most underated and I hate the cubs. us sox fans kept it real and didn't gripe about some curse. cubs need to get off the band wagon. and I too am annoyed by espn being so bias. yankees, red sox, cowboys, manny, poppi, and tiger woods. get off their nutz espn! white sox will win 5 in a row and they will still talk about all the other teams losses. what do we have to do! I guess win another one which is gonna happen regardless but at least the rest of the mlb and espn can suck it!

best current pitcher in MLB

Ok. The Phillies may have only won the WS twice, but they are really gaining potential. With the 5th lowest payroll in the MLB, the lineup and rotation only has a few flaws, unlike the Yankees who buy their wins. Plus the fans may be strict, but aren't front-runners. Just think. If the Yankees only had two WS wins, like the Phillies, how many fans would they have? Not as many, that's for sure. The Phillies use their Heart, Teamwork and sportsmanship every single game.

are you kidding any Cleveland team 141 years nothing. (mlb. nfl, nba)

104 years with no championships(MLB. NFL, NBA) no other city can match that in the USA. we come, we cheer, we wait. WHEN does the suffering end?

The MLB pitcher chased a man down with a machete, tied him up, and attempted to set him on fire. He is currently serving a 15 year prison sentence in Venezuela.

Nobody but nobody possessed the tremendous strength and blazing speed that Mantle had. If it hadn't had been for bad legs, injuries, and booze, he would have hit 800 home runs. He could have played pro football or basketball, exchanged punches with Marciano in the 50's as a professional boxer, been a powerlifter, or an Olympic decathlete. He was that talented. Mantle is, in my opinion, the greatest athlete ever. And he did it without steroids. Probably more fans paid to see Mantle play than any other athlete. Many fans also showed up early at the ballpark just see Mantle take batting practice. He is without a doubt the greatest clutch hitter in late innings MLB history. Mantle may be the fastest player ever and his perfect game-saving catch in the 1956 World Series is one of the best catches ever(very few center fielders ever could've made that play). Also, two players on the same team chasing Babe Ruth's homerun record (Mantle and Maris) is the second greatest athletic feat in history, only to be topped by Cal Ripken's unbelievable streak.

Agreed. "Athlete" of the century. I'll second that and toss in the name Dave Winfield as a close second. Don't laugh or immediately think I'm nuts...look it up and you'll see the resemblances I'm referring to. Dave just "chose" not to try to do all he was capable of and focused on baseball, which was arguably the weakest of his talents but the highest paying opportunity at the time. Tough choice given he was drafted into the NBA, NFL, MLB, the insanley popular at the time but now defunct ABA (the American Basketball Association), and also now defunct WHA (World Hockey Association), a narrow loser in terms of existence to the NHL (mostly poor marketing in a not so popular sport outside of the northern states for a black guy). Upon his graduation and shortly after the preeminent outfielder PITCHED the Minnesota Golden Gophers to a national collegiate world series championship and of course was named the MVP of the series as said pitcher he chose MLB. By the way, he was also the first athlete that was offered the opportunity to make the jump straight from high school to the NBA (ala Kobe, Lebron etc etc 30 years later). Much like our man Jim Thorpe (which although it seems I'm really pushing Winfield here as a god of sport) I still find as the athlete of the century, Winfield was drafted in more than one of these sports and offered large sums of money wihtout ever having played a down, play, or game at the collegiate level. And of course, he was the first man to go straight to the bigs, bypassing a single farm team game when he did finally choose baseball and the Padre's chose him. I'll stop here, but I could go on....check the guy out on google or wikapedia and then even ATTEMPT to put anyone in the same category as Jim Thorpe, him, or Jim Brown as a distant third when it comes to the uttely ridiculous but ultimately necessary conversations about who is the greatest athlete ever. Or take the easy way out and pick Secretariat and you'll get no arguments from the other horses :)

if you look only at MLB numbers not too impressive. but he didnt pitch that long in the MLB. His numbers in the negro leagues...unreal.
