Freddie wanted to die when he did.

In an interview in Germany right after the album The Works came out, Freddie said that he didn't know what he was going to do with music once he got too old to run around on stage, and that he never wanted to leave the business, knowing that, even though he died at such a young age (for dying) it's kind of like God found a way for him to never be too old to run around on stage, I'll bet you anything Freddie, Elvis, Hendrix, and Michael are jammin' up at the pearly gates - at their ripe young ages.
