1Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin should be at number 1 in this list to be honest. Stairway to Heaven, Kashmir are some of their few gun songs. And then the influence they have had. Great bands such as Queen, Metallica E.T. C were all inspired from Led Zep. And there is no word for the members of Led Zep.
In any fair nationwide (or worldwide, for that matter) poll, Led Zeppelin would bury everybody for greatest hard rock band. But don't limit Led Zeppelin to just hard rock or heavy metal, for they were so much more. Many carefully conducted large polls for greatest rock band, period, have placed Led Zeppelin at #1 in the world, with the only real competition coming from The Beatles. Led Zeppelin were simply the greatest rock band to have ever existed. And as for hard rock, there is nobody in the same building with Led Zeppelin.

Metallica are gods. I love Bon Jovi, Nirvana, The Sevenfolds etc. , but Metallica are godfathers to the Hard Rock itself. They are what Ozzy Osbourne is to Heavy Metal. Their blend is amazing, as they represent themselves with ballads as well as trashy songs. I think Nothing Else Matters is one of the most infamous songs in the world (along with Bon Jovi's 'you're giving love a bad name'. ) They are celebrating their 30 anniversary soon and they - hands down - deserve their spot as number one. I deeply respect every band on this list and listen to them all the time, but Metallica is... Metallica. Imagine - The Black Album. The snake on it is a giant Trademark not only to Metallica but to the music industry itself. Metallica has given us some of the most wonderful memories. I still remember shaking when seeing the footage of James' hair getting caught on fire. They ARE the best there is, the best there was AND the best there ever will be.
Who ever wrote the following statement "two words. Enter Sandman" Is an absolute fool. Enter sandman is NOT one of the best Metallica songs, the only reason people listen to it is because it's popular just like any rap or rnb whatever it's called these days. If enter sandman is your favorite hard rock, song you don't know ANYTHING about rock.

If Nirvana were alive... No other band would have existed or come close to it in the present day. Kurt Cobain was the best Rock Singer ever made by the almighty. His wit got reflected in the playing style of his guitar. His riffs were intelligent, simple and showed his pain. Also Dave Grohl played the real drums and the bass by Krist Novoselic simply ran through one's veins... It's very unfortunate that Kurt died so soon...

11Kiss
A lot of great bands up there; Priest, Rush, Van Halen, Zeppelin, Metallica etc.. But even more awesome bands are lower, and that's how it should be. I love some of these bands from all my heart, but it was KISS who got me into rock n' roll and metal, and that stays forever. It's like a brand on my heart, no matter what will happen, it will always be KISS. That's why I'm voting for them. KISS Forever

KISS should be up there higher. They inspired a lot of bands. They got me into classic rock. I am 11 and have been a fan since I was one, two, or three when I saw KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park. I remember my dad listening to whiskey in the jar, breakin the law, and KISS. My sisters first non nursery rhyme song she sang was beth. Mine was voodoo. I am the biggest KISS fan!

12Iron Maiden
In all technicality, Iron Maiden is classic heavy metal. As is Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, and Van Halen. Metallica is thrash metal, and Rush is art rock. Nirvana is grunge and Bon Jovi is barely even rock. But still, Iron Maiden is better than all of those in my eyes, so I would root for them even if they were in the "pop" category.

The best band ever in my eyes they have came from nothing and climbed to the top of the ladder.
This is the absolute best band ever. Pink Floyd are what changed it all; there was nobody else like Pink Floyd. I hate the fact that they broke up the year I was born; I would have loved to see them live.
Most floyd songs aren't that hard to be honest, however if you listen to their earlier stuff they could put a lot of grunge bands to the sword.

A band of Masters.
They explored the music in many different ways,
from classical, through rock n roll, and to metal.
Clearly a big influence for almost all the bands in here.
Deep Purple, along with the well known Led Zeppelin, constituted the idea of Hard Rock. Hits like Black Night, Hush, Child In Time and Smoke On The Water with its terrific riff led Deep Purple to an amazing amount of success in the U.K and America. The Band has just recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary and they are still going strong.

The band began in 1968 under the name of " Roundabout " but after some disappointing demonstration tracks Jon Lord sacked the drummer and the bassist, leaving himself a gap in the group. He was contacted by two people wanting to be the groups managers, bringing in Nick Simper {Bass} , Ian Paice {Drums} and Rod Evans {Vocals} who came from MI5.

The group changed its name to Deep Purple and went about recording its single, Hush/One More Rainy Day, which landed the group its first hit in Hush. The group then covered Neil Diamonds "Kentucky Woman" before recording their first album, "Shades Of Deep Purple". The album received a moderate amount of success so they decided to put "The Book of Taliesyn" out as quickly as possible to tap this. The album was successful and the band was on its way.
Part of the pioneers of British Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Trinity... Its a true CRIME that there not even mentioned in the Rock and roll hall of Shame

I've been a die hard Scorpions fan for 27yrs. They are simply one of the best Rock bands ever in the history of time. Kings of the Ballads forsure. No band writes ballads better then the SCORPS. Not to mention they love and adore their FANS. RAWK ON SCORPS. See Ya in California 2008.

I can't stress enough how much I love them, even though I'm only eleven years old. I even memorized their names and instruments. Ivan Moody-Vocals, Jeremy Spencers-Drums, Chris Kael-Bass, Zoltan Bathory-Guitars, and Jason Hook-Guitars.

Pete Townshend had some of the most talent that an artist ever chose not to showcase, sacrificing a showcase of his talents for the band. John Entwistle, the Ox, took an instrument that was formerly classified as a "background instrument" and lead with his non-stop typewriter attack. As for Keith Moon, he might be the most innovative and original drummer of all-time, inspiring generations after him including John Bonham and Neil Peart. But more important is the Who's complete living embodiment of rock. The energy they displayed, the raucous demolitions, the off-stage antics. In the end, the Who define the very genera they created, rising up from where the Beatles and Rolling Stones left off and paving the way for a future we continue to enjoy.

Pantera is amazing. All of the members are excellent musicians, and all of their songs reach the perfect balance of technique, heaviness, style, rhythm, and melody. Easily one of the definitive metal bands of the 1990s, and by far the kings of groove metal.

The only reason why godsmack is not that close to the top of this list is due to the fact the term "Hard Rock" is apparently lost on some people. Most of the bands near the top do not classify as hard rock nor have they made anything of the sorts that can even be considered rock. Going through this list has made me want to beat my head against the table as it only points out the fact people have no idea on what each genres are. Godsmack is one of the best Hard Rock bands out there that has been around for some time now and if you need an example of what a hard rock band sounds like just listen to some godsmack and if you still don't understand youll need to be smack by GOD.
Godsmack rocks harder than anyone on this list. They seem to be not very commercially acceptable so some stupid reason. They are the best band ever. GODSMACK FOREVER
