“There is no one else. Film acting begins and ends with Marlon Brando. He was the sole force of the acting revolution of the 1950’s, came before others of his generation like Clift and Dean, and single-handedly inspired the greatest generation of actors in film history that arrived during the 1970’s. Yet none of those great actors of the 70’s, who were so clearly inspired by him, could ever surpass him. His two landmark performances of that decade--The Godfather and Last Tango In Paris--are arguably his best, more nuanced and subtle than ever before, proving to the world that even amongst the generation of artist-actors that he inspired, he was still the greatest of them all. In fact, Brando is unique amongst revolutionary artists in that he is the only artist to be universally recognized as the single greatest genius in his field. Maybe Mozart earns that honor too, but what about Beethoven or Bach? Maybe Picasso, but what about Monet or Van Gogh? Perhaps Orson Welles, but what about Kubrick or Fellini? The Beatles? What about Dylan and Hendrix? It’s Shakespeare that probably comes the closest, but literary scholars would bring up Virgil, Homer, Chaucer, Tolstoy, John Keats and Dylan Thomas. There is no single "greatest" within any of these art forms, except within the art of acting in which Marlon Brando earns that distinct honor.”
“Humphrey Bogart: I came out here with one suit and everybody said I looked like a bum. Twenty years later Marlon Brando came out with only a sweatshirt and the town drooled over him.”
“His twenty minutes in The Godfather is the greatest acting class you’ll ever see, especially the undertaker scene. This kind of perfection wont be matched in a long long time.”
“He is absolutely magnificent in every role he plays. If the Oscars were awarded to the best acting performance of the year and not for a performance that is particularly excellent for a given actor, Hopkins would have won a dozen by now.”
“He plays the wisest, the strongest, the creepiest, and the funniest characters you’ve ever seen.”
“I LOVE Anthony Hopkins, but most people had never even heard of him before SOTL. He will forever be remembered for one role and one role only.”
4)
Tom Hanks
“Nominated for 5 academy awards for playing a little kid in a man’s body, a troubled WWII captain, a modern Robinson Caruso and his two Oscar winning roles as a gay man and a mentally challenged overachiever. Hanks is extremely versatile and is brilliant in both comedic and dramatic roles.”
“A versatile actor, deserves a place in top10. Johnny Depp, Russel Crowe are good too. Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro are too senior to be on the list - the are undoubtedly good.
”
“The Master!”
5)
Al Pacino
“An underspoken, under-rated actor. He is so very good at what he does. I love to watch him, almost like you can see his character’s thinking. He is very transparent and becomes the man he’s pretending to be on screen.”
“he should be above marlon brando imo”
“Today I watch movies because yesterday Al Pacino made them!”
6)
Johnny Depp
“I don’t think he is sexy but the man can act! He is very diverse and agile. He can be so funny, elusive, mysterious, boyish, wise, psycho, happy , sad, grevious, etc. And I believe every moment of his characters.”
“I fell in love with him as Edward Scissorhands and our affair is still going strong”
“The most talented and versatile actor ever. He has performed in probably the widest range of genres compared to any other actors and he has really excelled in every single one of them. Johnny Depp is a very very clever man.”
7)
John Gilbert
“biggest star of the 1920s”
8)
Hugh Laurie
“Why has this man not won an Emmy for his portrayal of Dr. House?
He is such a versatile actor, and fully commits himself to every role from House to Blackadder to Jeeves and Wooster to A bit of Fry and Laurie.
If you want proof, watch the House episode Detox, and then try to say that he didn’t deserve the emmy.”
“One of the most underrated, versatile, and downright talented actors of the 20th century. The man has talent coming out of his ears. His brilliant comedic wit, his dry yet human charm. From Blackadder to House, the man is amazing. He can make you laugh one second, and cry the next. Definitely in my top five.”
“House.
Wooster.
excellent”
“Perfect deliverer of lines and emotions. He makes mediocre movies watchable.”
“he IS a top one...”
“one of all time best!!”
10)
Russell Crowe
“Makin movies makin song anf fightin round the woarld!”
