Michael Vick and Pit Bulls, I'm Disgusted
Michael Vick has always been one of my favorite football players. I still remember the tie game with the Steelers a few years ago. Michael Vick almost single-handedly made it one of the greatest football games of all time. He was never the most upstanding citizen off the field, but his on the field abilities made it easy to overlook those flaws.No longer is this the case. After learning about the recent discoveries involving Michael Vick and large scale pit bull fighting rings, I can no longer ignore the character of Michael Vick.
ESPN has reported that police found 66 dogs, some of which were emaciated or injured, and other items associated with dog fighting while conducting a raid on a property owned by Michael Vick that was being occupied and maintained by members of his family.
Vick claimed that he knew nothing of the dogs and blamed his family members for taking advantage of his hospitality.
Unfortunately for Vick, this claim looks to be quite transparent and other evidence indicates that Michael Vick has been associated with dog fighting for years. According to John Goodwin with The Humane Society of America, the Society has been hearing reports for years about Michael Vick being involved in and participating in dog fighting which is a felony in 48 states. According to Goodwin:
“We get a lot of calls, and people were always kind of kicking his name around, but it was always difficult to put together a complete case on the guy. The word is that he has multiple layers of protection. When the search warrant was executed and they found all the things they found, it really came as no surprise.”
Pit bull fighting is an absolutely despicable practice; it is deriving pleasure through torture, violence, pain, and death. But it is even more than that because the participants are not willing. No pit bull naturally wants to fight and those that have been trained to do so only do so for survival. It is a miserable life for these poor creatures.
Pit bulls are amazing creatures. I have a pit bull and she is the best dog I have ever owned. Pit bulls are highly intelligent, empathetic, loving and gentle. They are wonderful family pets but it is because of people like Michael Vick that pit bulls have the reputation they do. It is people like Michael Vick that have made it illegal to own a pit bull in major cities in the U.S., Canada, and across the globe.
Pit bulls have gained a reputation as brutal, single-minded killers. To many, a pit bull is a breed whose only purpose is be tethered on a short chain and to instill fear. And because of these people, pit bulls become the thing that people fear. Like all dog breeds, pit bulls are not born mean, but like all dogs they will devolve into that sort of a creature when mistreated.
Pit bulls are perceived to be a tough, cool, and intimidating dog. When people get pit bulls for these traits, they are getting a status symbol. They do not realize that they are dealing with an intelligent living creature that needs companionship and affection. This seems to lead to one of three eventual conclusions. In some cases these people realize that the animal is a living breathing creature that needs to be cared for. Pit bulls in this situation are the lucky ones. The unlucky pit bulls either end up living a miserable life of inadequate care or are given up on and sent to the pound. You can see this firsthand by visiting almost any Humane Society. The number of pit bulls waiting to be put down is far higher than any other breed.
But what Michael Vick does is far beyond simple ignorance. It is sickening and it is embarrassing that in a society as advanced as ours, a multi-millionaire and celebrity has anything to do with such a primitive pastime. And it is equally sickening to me knowing that there are people out there who will look at Michael Vick as an example.
It is bad enough what people already think of pit bulls. A large percentage of the population believes them to be uncontrollable menaces and another subset of the population perpetuates this mentality. Check out an image search on Google for pit bull. When search for any other breed of dog this search returns a full page of pictures of well groomed adult, healthy puppies, and happy owners. In contrast, at the time I searched, the results for the phrase pit bull returned two images of injured pit bulls, one image of pit bulls in the act of fighting, one image of a pit bull bred for fighting, and one image of a dog that was reportedly killed by a pit bull. And all of these pictures were in the first 10 results.
These are the images that have become associated with pit bulls and these pictures show what is going to continue happening to these innocent creatures as long as people remain ignorant.

1) Yes I would still care about it. Anyone who had read the post could see that. In case the caption on the first picture is too small to read, that is my dog.
2) Once again, anyone who read the post would know that I am in no way implying that Michael Vick is the only one who participates in dog fighting. Of course he is a posterboy, that's the point.
3) By your third question, are you implying that as long as there is something worse happening in the world, it is not worth talking about the lesser evils? In that case, Bush is not even worth mentioning in comparison to the 2 million people who will die of AIDS in Africa this year alone. Finally, yes, Pit Bulls were bred for fighting but the result was an intelligent, athletic, eager to please breed of dog. What was not bred into the dogs was aggression, hate, and malice. i live in england and i have pitt bull puppy hes 4 months old we rescued him as a friend of a friend breed them to fight and he was gonna be used as bait as he didnt have very good markins he was the odd ball of the litter. we had him at 4 1/2 weeks and is in a loving home surrounded by kids he is taken to the local park were he plays with children and other dogs. so when people say pitt bull are dangerous are would love any1 to come to our park and see my dog if they cin him playing lovingly wiv both children and dogs they would have a very different oppion.
