An Alaskan's Take on Sarah Palin

I spent last night in an angry funk. I have chosen to share my thoughts with you, so that I might vent. Please feel free to share them.

Along with billions of others, I watched our unbelievably charmed governor speak last night. The gushing of Sarahlove was amazing. Not everyone in Alaska is similarly infected. At least not those who have the ability to think, study, reason, and pay attention. Here, as in most of America (and probably the world), those folks are in the minority. I have been in a position to be close to some of the issues that are being raised. I personally know many of the players. And because I pay close attention to what goes on in Alaska, I am one of the people who knows how much dishonesty is at play here. The thing that made me so angry last night was the realization that, at that level, no one cares. In fact it is by design.

The McCain campaign, and in particular the lovely and talented "Queen of the World" Sarah Palin, have absolutely no problem facing the cameras and broadcasting to the world bold faced lies. It was frightening to me to see how quickly that women has sold her soul. Either they think no one in Alaska is watching, or more likely, realize that the tens of thousands of people who know she is lying and misleading are insignificant compared to the millions, if not billions of people who will not know. It's a simple math problem. Honesty just doesn't matter.

Her most blatant lie is her statement, that she repeated twice during the convention, is that she boldly told Washington "thanks, but no thanks!" to the money to fund the Gravina Island Bridge (the bridge that John McCain dubbed the "bridge to nowhere" - in fact it would have connected the city of Ketchikan to their international airport, which is only accessed by ferry boats). The news media here, particularly in Ketchikan, have rolled out the footage of Governor Sarah Palin standing at the site in Ketchikan telling an enthusiastic crowd how much she supports this bridge, is fighting for the money for it, and making a point of showing how this is "somewhere". The earmark DID come to the State. Only after the "Bridge to Nowhere" remark got so much negative media attention, did Queen Sarah decided maybe is was a political liability and she killed the bridge project. But guess what? The State KEPT the money! She said, in no uncertain terms in her speech that she sent it back. I guess the truth just doesn't matter if only a few thousand hicks from her former life know it.

That is just one example. There is so much more spinning going on. Her claim that she has started the construction of the gas pipeline is another one. Jesus Christ, she sold the project to a Canadian Company, and if it is ever built (she implied that construction was underway), it will pump Alaska's natural gas into Canada. She also gave that Canadian company a half a billion dollars as an incentive. The big counter push here was to build an all Alaska pipeline, first and foremost to provide gas for Alaskans, and second, to keep control of the gas with the USA. She now takes credit for pushing America's energy.

There are many other tidbits coming out in Alaska media that shed light on Sarah's "other face". For example, in a recent talk she gave at her church in Wasilla (that someone was recording) she made the statements that the United States sent troops to fight in Iraq on a "task that is from God". And that the fighting in Iraq is "God's plan". She also implored them to pray for the gas line (in which she had a HUGE political stake), because it, too, is part of God's plan.

I watched in amazement as McCain's senior campaign spokesman spoke of her military experience. She has "extensive" military experience as the commander of the Alaska National Guard. It is true that by statute, in every State, the governor is the ultimate commander of the Guard on STATE deployments, usually natural disasters and such. When they are "federalized" such as for deployments to war, the governor has no control over that. Because of the job I was in at the time Miss Sarah took office as governor, I personally know the guys who "briefed her up" on her role with regard to the Alaska National Guard. It had to be explained to her what the National Guard is, how the Guard works, and how it can be deployed. She had little knowledge of any of that 20 months ago. She has not had to deploy or exercise any guard units since being governor. The N.G. General exercises the day to day control over the Guard. She did go to the middle east to shake hands with deployed Alaska Guard Troops last year, her first trip out of the country. That the McCain campaign can put her out there next to John McCain's military record and make the statement "She has EXTENSIVE military experience as commander of the Alaska National Guard" is outrageous. Doesn't the party that is generally aligned heavily with the armed forces have a problem with that?

The recent flap about her daughter is too much. The poster family for family values. The kid's not getting an abortion so they are all heroes. An Associated Press article today says "the republican message about the Palin offspring comes across as contradictory - hey media, leave those kids alone - so we can parade them around as we see fit. Consider this: on Wednesday morning a teenage boy from Alaska stood in the receiving line on an airport tarmac, being glad-handed by the potential next president of the United States - BECAUSE HE GOT HIS GIRLFRIEND PREGNANT." A not so well known fact is that she lived with her aunt for much of last year. I wonder why. This young man, known in his school as "sex on skates" had a myspace (or facebook) page where he described himself as "fucking cool". That page suddenly was re-made into a nice portrait. In fact, the local media has turned up many examples of various documents regarding Sarah or family members that have been recently changed or they disappeared altogether. Who does that?! Does a campaign have the ability to change history, or is a government agency involved? It is frightening.

All this to say that last night I was left with an overwhelming feeling that honest and integrity are for the naive. Cheaters, liars, and bullies really do get ahead. And crime pays.
